Playing with purple

March 31st, 2009 Comments Off

I’ve been playing with colour in the lab thanks to Tiel who uses it to perfection. It’s a fantastic tool, loads of fun to use and incredibly addictive; I spent way too much time there! I love these berry shades with a shot of lemon, it even sounds yummy. And maybe just the thing for a girl and a duck.

Matchbox mania

March 28th, 2009 § 2 Comments

I absolutely adore vintage matchboxes!
I love the textural quality of the inks on the card.
I love the limited colour pallets.
I love the use of contrast.
I love the mixture of line and flat colour areas.
I love that there is no such thing as true white or black.
And I love that their small size limits detail, making them beautifully graphic.

Hmm, might be a sweet approach to ‘Childs Play’. I wonder how close I could get with my Gocco?

Little Things – Words and Pictures

March 26th, 2009 § 3 Comments

It’s the little things that sparkle in our memories.
The smell of the first drops of rain on a sun-baked path.
Watching dust particles dance and swirl in a ray of sunlight.
Feeling the tingling touch of someone you love drawing on your back.
Life is full of little things.

I’m playing along with Pip’s ‘Words and Pictures’ meme, read more here.

Childs Play – Ink drawings

March 25th, 2009 § 5 Comments

Ta Dahhh!! Three ‘Child’s Play’ drawings out of four. I’d love to print these with my Gocco. It’d be nice to get some lovely unpredictable print textures in them.

As a side note, I was told my new Gocco was the very last one available. Such a tragedy! I’m still hoping they’ll be pulled from the brink of extinction by some entrepreneurial clever-clogs. All they have to do is devise a cost-effective green method of adapting the machine and voila!… instant clamouring market.

In the mean time, I’d better bear in mind the availability of Gocco inks and the growing threat of discontinued colours. When I received the colour chart from Nehoc I have to admit my heart sank a little. Never mind, perhaps it will push my colour choices in a fresh direction and that’s always good.

Dreams of melting crayons

March 24th, 2009 § 6 Comments

I saw this clever idea for making stubby broken crayons more useful on Fiona’s gorgeous blog ages ago. And made a mental note to try it out with my little chickens when they were old enough to appreciate the ‘Wow’ factor.

Well that day was today. And the melty crayons were a huge success! The anticipation was overwhelming. First the cooking, fueled by the ever-ticking oven timer,… the cooling, which obviously took an eternity… then the big spectacular reveal… only to then lay them out for photography. Oh! The agony they must have felt.

UH AHH! NOT YET! … click!

Lots of fun and oh so satisfying. One might say even yummy, ahem… but not around the children! Oh, if you like the idea of these you might also love these. What a cool gift… Of course, I mean for the kids.

Savaged by the travel bug

March 23rd, 2009 Comments Off

Yes, it’s true. Savaged, chewed up and swallowed right from the outset.

From my very first trip abroad, I was smitten. I loved exploring the differences in cultures and how it opens your eyes to an environment and at the same time refreshes your perception of your home. It’s completely addictive, unpredictable and incredibly romantic. Ink Caravan would not be complete without this theme somewhere near its heart. So this is the first of many posts on exotic places in story, illustration, photography or ephemera.
