Shaky

I could have taken a more dramatic view of Illustration Friday’s theme for this week, SHAKY. Perhaps I should have delved deeper for a more poignant interpretation. But, in all sincerity, I was in the mood for sketching something light and free. And who can fail to be mesmerised by an Arabian dancers shaking hips. Or the flash and glitter of the costumes, the warm colours, or the air heavy with the smell of aromatic spices.

The whole experience is undeniably intoxicating.

Thursday Theatre

Too wet to go out too cold to play ball
So we sat in the house we did nothing at all…

Scoff! Don’t believe a word! Just like Dr Suez’s ‘Cat in the hat’ our day (ie a rainy day stuck inside with one grownup and two preschoolers) had bucket loads of drama and performance. Yessiree one minute the dark clouds gathered, the next the sun shone.

Anticipating restless natives, I took on the dramatic (and highly creative) roll of revered pastry chef. I donned the much coveted, voluptuous chef’s hat and strutted and gestured about my kitchen like a complete nutter, just so I could keep a weather eye on my two little monsters angels.

They loved it! And really, what’s not to love!? A show and refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere, sure sounds perfect to me. My standing ovation was played out in ‘licking the bowl’ squabbles. And tickets for the next show (ie two seats at the end of the kitchen bench) are already dibs’d.

So all in all our soggy day in was a big success. The reviewers said:

the cookies were yummy…
Mummy you should be a real chef…
(
and my favourite)… I’m changing my name to Dora Olivia Lauren Cat

Pop over to Kirsty’s to find My Creative Spacers aplenty. Fun, fun!

Going with the flow

It’s a new week and I should be gung-ho, throwing myself at new work, but instead I’m contemplative. My heels stuck fast in Sunday. I love these romantic paintings by Tissot, the strength in the women and the languid atmosphere. Hope your weekend was equally wonderful.

Drifting

July 1st, 2009 § 9 Comments

Last week’s Illustration Friday theme was DRIFT. A few thoughts leapt to mind immediately. Firstly that in my twenties I lived in a state of ‘drift’. In fact I spent the entire decade perpetually moving house, always haphazardly and often comically. Repeatedly stuffing all my worldly possessions into the back of a tiny hatchback and driving off looking like some bizarre circus-act.

Secondly it brought to mind a scene in Peter Carey’s wonderful, ‘Oscar and Lucinda’. The image of a fully built, shimmering glass church drifting on the river is evocative, magical and completely inspiring.

And thirdly, there was no way I was going to make the submission deadline. Still, I was inspired enough to illustrate it anyway. And who knows perhaps a little of this gal’s serenity will rub off on me. Here’s hoping!

Where Am I?
