Breakfast on Mars

September 23rd, 2009 § 6 Comments

This morning we awoke to find our Sydney neighbourhood completely engulfed in what looked like a thick, blood-red fog. As it grew lighter, every window filtered in an unearthly glow so eerie that it was easy to imagine a whole foaming herd of apocalyptic horses.

I love these images captured by Tom Hide because they are so true to the intense colour and pea soup nature of the dust storm. It was like the atmosphere of another world.

Hooray for cameras because it is only hours since and it has all blown away. Even now, but for these shots, it could just be a tall tale or an urban myth. I’d say it’s proof that truth truly is stranger than fiction.

Nature is quite amazing! I never cease to be in aw of forces and phenomenon like this… hope it’s not too destructive, I hear it’s really hard on electronics and doesn’t really make cars mechanical parts too happy either…

Thanks Shirley, I am much better now and have finally managed to finish mopping up all the dust. How it manages to get through tightly closed windows and doors is a mystery.

Hi Mary, Yeah I did take some shots, but they weren’t nearly as jaw dropping as these. I wonder if Tom’s camera is still working!?

Coolness!! Wow, that is one serious dust storm…glad you all made it through. It’s amazing to see nature work it’s magic like that..though I’m sure it wasn’t “magical” at the time..sounds a bit eery from what you wrote. Love seeing your color versions of the windy day…I really like them both, but I am such a conservative girl that I think the blue/yellow tones work better for the “mood”…the red-toned one is lovely but seems more springlike to me…(but that could just be me)..hope you’re feeling better!
