So Inspiring ~ Mimi Kirchner
March 10th, 2010 § 8 Comments

There were two things I promised I’d make for my poppets while they were little, a quilt and a softie; special things made with love especially for them. I figure if I manage nothing else I’ll be pretty chuffed with that, and with any luck so will they. So whilst searching for a little guidance, I stumbled across Mimi Kirchner. What an inspiring lady!
She creates such fantastic personalities. Illustrated characters that have pried themselves off the page and are off to do their own thing. Whether peeved pirates, preppy schoolgirls or cheeky strong men, everyone is decked in lovely handmade details and fabulous facial expressions!

To be honest, I have never been a huge lover of dolls. Frankly, the hard plastic ones give me chills. Trying to choose a baby doll for my littlest was tricky at best…
… But I love Mimi’s. They inspire me to wield needle and thread and try making a sumo wrestler, a crocodile wrestler… or maybe even a jelly wrestler… who knows, Mimi makes anything seem possible!
There’s a wonderful Storque spot on Mimi here and a free pattern for one of her dolls here.
Ooh, I like those. Plastic dolls creep me out – luckily my daughter has shown no interest in the plastic dolls, so the ones with opening eyes found their way into the charity bag rather swiftly…
Looking forward to seeing your sumo, crocodile and (so wrong!) jelly wrestlers….
The little doll in the bottom pic is just too cute!
Thanks for sharing this talented lady – I love the “tats” on the man dolls! Classic! Nic
These dolls are fantastic! I love how she has used the toile fabric design to suggest tattoos. Very witty. But this is the spooky bit, I was looking at her site last week,(having never seen it before) looking for pincushion inspiration. Maybe the 100 million blogs in the world is a falacy. Good luck with your dolls xxN
Beautiful dolls. The printed fabric as tattoo is a stroke of brilliance.
Ah, yes, Nigella. Long may she reign.
I love her dolls…..especially that last, cute, pod-like one….fabulous!
As for your comment on my blog about Johnny and his crazy Mad Hatter eyes…..watch it!
The eyes are great…brilliant colour!
And Helena Bonham Carter is (as always) brilliant….I read somewhere that she based the Red Queen on her toddler and you can really see that….very funny!

Thanks so much!
